Roger Goodell… “As far as overtime, there doesn't seem to be much interest in changing it. We feel we have a very good system that encourages teams to win the game in regulation. That's what the job is.”
There has been a lot of talk about the structure of the NFL’s overtime period. There has been talks that there is an unfair advantage for the team that loses the coin toss to start the overtime period, or that the NFL should adopt the college football overtime format. Woody Paige even said that both teams should be given at least one opportunity to have the football on offense to even the opportunity for each team to score. Others say that the NFL overtime format perfect as is. I believe that things should change!!
The NFL should adopt an overtime quarter lasting 7 minutes and 30 seconds, half of a full quarter. Teams will go through the normal coin toss to see who kicks and who receives. The quarter will be played for the entire time and who ever has the most points at the end of the overtime period wins.
In the event that the game is still tied at the end of that period the game will be recorded at a tie. This will clear everything. It will allow both team’s offenses as well as defenses to prove their case for half a quarter to see if they can squeeze out a win.
Here is the talk about the overtime period...
